Kay Dean

October 22, 1926 - August 24, 2010

Kay Dean passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on August 24, 2010. Kay was born in Oconomowoc on October 22,1926. She was the fourth daughter of William C. Hansen and Esther Rintelman. Kay graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from UW-Madison. She married Robert W. Dean in 1947 and together they raised seven children. Kay was active in the Marathon County Democratic Party. She met John F. Kennedy at Wausau’s Labor Temple and hosted Robert Kennedy in her home. Kay was an active member of the Wausau Curling Club, League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women. She loved to golf and was an avid bridge player. In 1978,she entered the workforce again becoming director of Waushara County Commission on Aging. In 1980, she returned to Wausau as the Executive Director of the Marathon County Red Cross. While at the Red Cross she established an infant seat rental program and went to Topeka, Kansas to do flood relief. Her trip of a lifetime was to Africa. After retirement, Kay was on the board of Tower Credit Union. She taught water aerobics at Woodson YMCA for twelve years, was an active member of the Universalist Church and did volunteer work for the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. Kay was always asking “what can I do to help”. She bids a fond farewell to her family and friends after a life well lived. She believed the spirit lives on as family and friends remember. And she will be remembered for her generosity and optimism. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved sister, Helen Hansen and a grandson, William Dean. She is survived by her sisters, Ann Buck of Stevens Point, Ruth Sanderson of East Jordan, Michigan, and her children, Lucinda (Gary Snyder) of Whitewater, Daniel (Cindy Tennant) of Fort Collins, CO, Timothy of Anchorage, Alaska, Robert P. of Denver, CO, Kathy (Alan Miller) of Bennett, CO, Christopher of Sun Prairie, Jennifer Andrews (Mark) of Madison and her grandchildren, Andrea Lach Dean of Providence, RI, Thomas Lach Dean of Minneapolis, MN, Elizabeth Dean of Anchorage, Alaska and Zenith and Zoe Andrews of Madison.
